Jack Cohen, an Associate at SE2, isn’t just a skilled communicator—he’s a problem-solver with a passion for breaking down barriers. Joining SE2 fresh out of college, Jack quickly adapted from an academic approach to one rooted in real-world connection. Today, he crafts messages that resonate by meeting audiences where they are and reflecting their values back to them. When he’s not tackling communications challenges, Jack’s insatiable curiosity leads him to uncover how things work, whether he’s digitizing old VHS tapes or decoding tech troubles for loved ones. In this Q&A, Jack shares his journey, the lessons he’s learned at SE2, and the goals driving his career.
Q: How has SE2 changed your communications approach?
My time at SE2 began right after college; I quickly realized that my academic approach to communication wasn’t serving our audiences.
The ingrained academic values of over-sharing specifics and constructing nuanced arguments had to go. I’ve learned that connecting with diverse communities requires a different approach.
Now, I focus on considering where audiences are, what they value most, and what will move them to act on specific issues. Conveying facts is only one part of the message – it’s crucial that viewers can see their values in your message and understand that you see them, too.
Q: How do you embody SE2’s values outside of work?
For me, the SE2 value of curiosity doesn’t end at work. I love figuring out how and why things work the way they do and spend my free time exploring whatever catches my interest.
I’m “tech support” for my loved ones mostly due to my drive to understand why things aren’t working when I think they should. Some of my recent deep dives have included VHS digitization, hosting my own websites, and finding GIFs of my favorite TV moments to bombard loved ones.
Q: What are your career goals?
I’m driven by making complex information and resources more accessible to people who need them. Removing barriers and helping others navigate challenges in our community makes each day feel meaningful, and I hope to feel proud of the impact that my work has on the world.
