Next year, ComNet, the annual conference by The Communications Network, is coming to our hometown, Denver, and we couldn’t be more excited to invite you. The Communication Network is a national organization dedicated to advancing the role of communications in fostering social change and supporting mission-driven work. Next Oct. 15-17, hundreds of passionate communications professionals will gather at the Hyatt Regency Denver to learn, connect, and inspire one another.
ComNet25 promises three days packed with ideas, insights, and inspiration — a perfect opportunity to explore fresh perspectives on “Communications for Good” right in the heart of the Rocky Mountains.
Ay ComNet24 last month in Kansas City, we experienced dynamic workshops, inspiring keynotes, and some of the most valuable networking opportunities in our field. The conference gave us space to connect meaningfully with colleagues from diverse backgrounds, dive into the latest communications trends, and exchange ideas that will shape the future of cause-based marketing.
SE2’s RJ Johnson, Mikhail Talley and Susan Morrisey share their takeaways from the event below.
Why is ComNet Important?
ComNet brings together people who want to drive change and make an impact through communication. The conference allows people from similar roles across nonprofits, foundations, and companies like SE2 to connect and create meaningful relationships. Learning and building connections with people from all over the world makes ComNet unique. I left with valuable insights, renewed energy for my work. – RJ
ComNet encourages bringing deeper insightful thought to our work and provides a valuable opportunity to recenter on why our work as communications professionals driving positive change is so important. This was my second year attending, and while I didn’t think my first experience could be topped, I was pleasantly proven wrong. I left this year’s event feeling more knowledgeable about our field, humbled, inspired, and connected to new contacts who are equally passionate about using communication to change the world, one word at a time. -Mikhail
If you’re a communicator in the space of cause-based marketing, ComNet is among the very best, with timely topics and presenters who are doing some of the most interesting work in the nation. This year, author and Wharton School professor Jonah Berger talked about the art and science behind language as a tool to engage and influence audiences. Others shared the powerful effects of storytelling and key messengers to build trust in diverse communities; the future of communications in an AI-powered world; and leading-edge digital tools to enhance communications. – Susan
What is the Value of Identity-Based Circles?
This year, ComNet introduced networking and learning “circles” based on identity, such as Black and LGBTQ+ communications professionals – adding opportunities to gather in small groups to its already established state and regional networks. The option to gather based on identity brought a new layer of community and belonging. We look forward to hopefully connecting more through these circles throughout the year and coming again next year with deeper connections with people who share our identities.
I joined both the Colorado and LGBT+ circles, and it felt amazing to be with people who share my identities and commitment to communications for good. I look forward to continuing with the virtual LGBT+ circle meetings to build a network of peers who share my passion. – RJ
Seeing your identity reflected among others in your field is crucial. It creates the space to explore what our work looks like through the lens of shared experiences. I’m not a natural networker, but these circles make connecting much easier with people you already share so much in common with, allowing for deeper, more relatable conversations. I’m genuinely looking forward to continuing to attend ComNet Denver events and building community with the incredible Black communicators I had the privilege to meet. – Mikhail
Creating space for professionals from diverse backgrounds and experiences to learn from one another is crucial for ensuring their voices drive our communications. Already, I’ve seen it generate enthusiasm in our team for the work they do and their unique place at the center of our profession. – Susan
Why ComNet?
This was my first conference, and I left energized and inspired. The workshops and conversations were insightful, even when not directly tied to my role. I met friendly, talented people, learned from thought-provoking workshops, and got a free headshot. It was an experience that reinforced why I’m passionate about communications. – RJ
ComNet is an experience I’d recommend to any communications professional who has the chance to attend. You’re guaranteed to learn something new, whether from a keynote speaker, a session, or a conversation with a peer. You’ll connect with professionals from across the country, each working in different areas of our field, bringing fresh perspectives and exciting ideas. Most importantly, you’ll leave feeling grounded and inspired by the knowledge that our work truly matters and that we really do have the power to change the world with words. – Mikhail
