Bazi Kanani’s Newest Assignment: Director of Content for SE2

July 13, 2020

When Eric Anderson told our content team that Bazi Kanani may be available to help on a couple of projects, the reaction could have been scripted:
THE Bazi Kanani?!”
Her assistance couldn’t have been better timed. With the impact of COVID-19 moving our daily meetings, and lives, online, we were gearing up to do more organic video content than ever — so Bazi’s TV background quickly became indispensable. We also soon saw that she is a remarkable writer, editor and strategist.
Bazi’s experience turned out to be just what SE2 needed. Now, we get to announce that Bazi is SE2’s new director of content.
Bazi previously spent five years with ABC News, reporting from London, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and Nairobi, Kenya. While living in Nairobi, Bazi led efforts to increase news coverage of sub-Saharan Africa. Her reporting for ABC’s broadcast, radio and website platforms has been featured on Good Morning America, This Week with Christiane Amanpour/George Stephanopoulos, World News with Diane Sawyer/David Muir and Nightline.
If Coloradans recognize her it may be because, prior to joining ABC News, Bazi spent eight years as a Denver-based reporter and anchor for KUSA 9News. Her work there earned her recognition from news-industry peers. In 2005, she was named Broadcast Journalist of the Year by the Colorado Association of Black Journalists.
Her 2007 documentary, “My Africa,” which chronicled her travels to East Africa, earned her an Emmy Award and a National Association of Black Journalists Award. In 2008, her “Reaching Rwanda” report on genocide-recovery efforts in that country won an Associated Press award and a regional Edward R. Murrow award.
“I was privileged to spend the first half of my career informing people about the most pressing issues facing their communities,” Bazi said. “Now I get to help lead SE2’s dynamic team of mission-driven professionals partnering with our clients to take on those issues and effect change.”
“We are thrilled to have Bazi join our team,” said SE2 CEO Susan Morrisey. “She has deep and diverse multimedia storytelling experience that will take our work on behalf of public-issues clients to a whole new level.”
Bazi was born in Colorado and raised in the Eastern Plains community of Wiggins.
“I am an adventurer at heart and treasure the opportunities I have had to live, work and travel across our country and around the world. But I’m also fortunate to have been raised in an incredible state, and I am thrilled to get back home to Colorado,” said Kanani.
Along with her husband and two children, Bazi is currently living and working from San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, with plans to return to Denver this fall.
“As with the rest of our team during the COVID-19 crisis, Bazi is working remotely but already taking over the reins of our content team,” said Morrisey. “We are excited for what the future holds as she and our Director of Creative Juan Cabrera begin collaborating to produce compelling creative and content.
